Other Pain Treatments

Exercise programs—such as physical or aquatic therapy—can often be tailored to your specific needs to increase functioning and decrease pain. Electrical stimulation can be used; this treatment diminishes pain by stimulating nerve fibers through the skin. Acupuncture specialists may also provide relief to some painful conditions. In rare cases, surgery may be required when the patient does not respond to other treatments for pain.

Finally, psychological support is helpful to patients who feel the emotional effects of suffering—anger, sadness and despair. Severe pain can also alter personalities, disrupt sleep, and have a profound impact of family members. Counseling, and self-help therapies such as relaxation training and bio-feedback, can be helpful in these cases.
